A Planned Company Town: Powell River, British Columbia

Two of the civic buildings of Powell River:

A town is not made up solely of homes.  For a vibrant life, appropriate civic buildings are a necessity, and for a small Company town, Powell River was well provided with good public buildings by the Powell River Company. To fill out the architectural background of Powell River, two of the public buildings are featured here:

Dwight Hall

The main public building in Powell River is Dwight Hall. Built in 1927 the large multi-purpose Hall was designed by John McIntyre, the town site manager. Dwight Hall provided a dance hall for 800 people, as well as a stage for performances, kitchens for banquets and Lodge and Library facilities in the lower levels, which overlook a small park. The Company sold the Hall to the District of Powell River in 1957, who have since kept it in good condition.
